New inspiration and a new decade bring change. Choosing your wedding gown is a big decision. Many brides have dreamed of their wedding since childhood and have many ideas about how they want their dresses to look. Some brides can be overwhelmed by the variety of styles. Western Australia Wedding & Bridal discusses what to look for when choosing a wedding gown and how to customize it to create a unique creation.
Tailor-Made
Consult a tailor before customizing your wedding gown to ensure that the original features and the structure of the dress will remain intact. Selman says that professional tailors are extremely talented at what they do. We encourage brides, therefore, to use reputable tailors so as not to compromise the structure and look of a dress. A professional tailor can ensure that your wedding gown will be exactly as you imagined, especially if you are adding intricate embellishments. Listen to your tailor or dressmaker’s advice to get the exact look you want without compromising the fit or structure.
You should factor in your budget when tailoring your wedding gown. Selman explains that “many hours are spent on perfecting appliques and beading. The more work required by a dressmaker the more it will cost.” Be sure to schedule additional fittings before adding some creative flair to your dress. This will allow the tailor to spend any extra time. Choose a simple, elegant gown with a sweetheart-shaped neckline. Add appliques to add texture and pattern. Choose a skirt with a large A-line and intricate appliques to add a 3-dimensional element to your dress. There are endless options!
Turning Heads
Over the years, bridal styles have changed and evolved. Traditional gowns are now blending with more modern styles, creating a whole new generation of dresses for brides. Bridal capes have become increasingly popular, and gowns now incorporate more volume with fabrics and materials. From feathers to bows of all kinds and everything in between, these are the latest trends. Brides are seeking more unique ways to make themselves stand out in the crowd with these new trends. Selman explains that brides are using a variety of appliques to enhance their bridal gowns. Her favorites include hand-beaded patterns of leaves and flowers on the bodices. Current trends in bridal appliques are the use of materials that create a three-dimensional texture and show volume.
The applique doesn’t just have to be used as a way to embellish your wedding gown. We are seeing beautiful appliques used to enhance shapes and silhouettes. Selman explains that we may see lines or shapes enhanced with beading and lace, which are designed to accentuate curves, elongate a body, and draw attention to certain features. Selman suggests that brides who want a flowing, large gown look for wedding gowns with Chantilly or sheer beaded laces over tulle. This will create an illusion. French corded laces can create a raised look for brides who want to add some volume to their ensemble. For sleek silhouettes, applique is another option. Selman says, “We’ve seen silk flowers or exquisite hand-beaded flower cascade down skirts and used to enhance sheer sleeves and bodies.”
There are many ways to enhance the look of your gown. Indian beading and three-dimensional flowers create a romantic feel, while Indian beading gives it a luxurious touch. Appliques can be used to highlight a style or give your gown a more textured look. Consider using applique to create an elegant and classic look on a dress that has a large skirt. “Ornate beaded laces paired with following tulle a-line skirts can create a classical look,” Selman says. Selman recommends using glitter tulle with beaded lace for the modern bride. Selman says that when you’re looking for the “perfect dress,” you can forget about how you feel and lose your style. If it makes you look and feel amazing, it is your dress.
It is important to feel comfortable on your wedding day. Follow your heart, and try as many dresses on as possible. Maybe with some appliques, this dress will be yours.
