Jacqueline Maya shares her tips on how to find the perfect wedding suit.
Western Australia Bride & Wedding explains how to find a suit for your wedding.
When the Suit Fits
There are three different types of suits: regular, slim, and tailored
Regular fit is the classic style, which is perfect for men who like a more relaxed fit. It has some extra room for movement. Slim fit suits men with smaller builds. A tailored fit, on the other hand, is an excellent in-between style, as it offers a bit more freedom than a regular but still has a slim fit’s restrictions. A poorly fitting suit is the worst. Here are some tips to help you avoid making these mistakes.
Shoulders Above the Rest
To ensure your suit fits you perfectly, pay attention to how it sits against your shoulders. The shoulder pads should fit naturally, and the seams of the sleeves should be on the edge.
Keep it to Your Chest.
A common mistake is choosing the wrong size jacket for your body type. If your hand can be easily slipped into the suit when the middle or top button is fastened, then you know it is the right size. Depending on the style, the buttons should not fall below the belly button. The length of the jacket is equally important. Your knuckles, with your arms at your side, should be level with the bottom edge of your coat.
The Sleeve Has It All
Correct sleeve size is crucial to the look of your suit. The ideal visible sleeve should be between one-quarter and one-half inch. It is also important to have a minimum of one inch of break in the length of your trousers. The ‘break,’ or fold that appears when the bottom of your front leg meets the shoe, is what we call a trousers’ break.
The Fitting
Never underestimate the skills of a skilled tailor. Custom-made suits will prevent you from having to make alterations later. If you buy a suit off the rack and it does not fit right, you should have it altered.
Be aware of your footwear when you are being fitted. Your socks, trainers, or thongs will not be the same size as your wedding shoes. It would be best if you chose your boots before the fittings so that you don’t have to make last-minute changes.
Styles to Suit All
Your wedding should reflect your and your bride’s personalities, tastes, and styles. When it comes to your suit’s style, keep in mind that you are the one who will wear it. You should feel comfortable wearing your suit and that it represents your style.
Tux Or Classic?
Wearing a tuxedo to your wedding is not necessary unless you are a James Bond fan or have opted for an extremely traditional wedding. There are many classic suits available that look as stylish, if not even more so than the traditional tux. A waistcoat will make a big difference if you’re looking for something more formal. You can experiment with colors and fabrics if adding an extra layer doesn’t appeal to you.
Color Counts
Light colors like powder blue, cream, or grey are great for experimenting with color. For a more adventurous groom, navy or royal blue are also great options. Deep, rich colors like oxblood and plum, as well as dark green, will suit you. Try a suit with a pattern, such as a houndstooth, herringbone, or striped suit, if color is not your thing. Choose the right style, color, or fabric for you.
Let the Suit Shine
The old saying “less is better” holds when selecting accessories for your suit. Western Australia Wedding & Bride recommends choosing no more than three accessories for your suit to achieve a simple but elegant look. The perfect complement to a suit is a patterned or colored pocket square, cufflinks, suspenders, or bow tie.
Hip to Be Square
Pocket squares have become very popular, but if you want to make them unique, use a handkerchief that belonged to your father or grandfather. Matching your pocket square with the color of the bouquet can be subtle but effective.
The Off The Cuff
The groomsmen will love the personalized touch that engraved cufflinks add.
Throw in the Tie
You’ll find that bow ties and suspenders make a great, stylish alternative to the traditional tie. With so many colors and patterns available, you can choose a combination to suit you. Keep the rest of your outfit simple if you already wear a suit that is patterned, striped, or colorful.
Don’t Sweat it.
A good suit will not make you feel nervous when marrying your love. Select your suit according to the season of your wedding. Suit sweat is the worst!
A linen suit is ideal for weddings during the summer months. It’s cool, and it breathes well. For a wedding during the cooler months, you should opt for heavier fabrics like wool, worsted, or wool blends. Cashmere, velvet, and flannel are all excellent fabrics that keep you warm. Don’t forget the stitching! The stitching is there to keep the garment in good shape during transit. It should be removed when you are ready to wear it. Stitching is often found on the sleeves, outer chest pockets, and back of jackets.
Take the advice below to heart, and shopping for a suit will become a pleasant experience. You’ll be ready before you even need to go down the aisle.
